Year 2 Information
Dear Parent/Carer,
Thank you for settling the children back into school so well after the summer break.
This letter should provide some information with regards to the running of the school week in Year 2 and how to use websites and homework that children will need to log in to access.
Curriculum
This year, the children’s learning will continue to be focused around a different topic each half term. Information regarding the content of these topics will be available on the website at the start of each half term. Mrs Jones will be teaching R.E and doing the children’s spelling test each week, Chris will be teaching P.E. each week with an additional cricket coach coming in to teach on a Monday for the first half term and Music will be taught by Minshall Music.
Spellings
A list of spellings from our Spelling Shed scheme will be uploaded onto Seesaw each Monday and the children will also take home a spelling book to practise. The spelling test will be each Monday and will focus on either a particular spelling pattern or Common Exception Words. Children can also access https://spellingshed.com where there are games linked to each week’s spellings – your child will be given a login to take home with them.
Homework
Alongside their weekly spellings, children will have other tasks to complete. This will be to consolidate counting or times tables in Maths and either an additional reading comprehension or grammar focus. Homework will be given out in homework books every Monday to be completed by the following Monday.
Seesaw
Information on how to access Seesaw and your child’s log in has been sent home. Seesaw will be used for any additional information that may need to be shared as well as spellings.
Reading
Children are given opportunities to read throughout the school day. The whole class may read together during English lessons and the children are grouped for Phonics lessons. In addition, guided reading will take place every day within Phonics groups. Children will be given a book matched to their current Phonics learning to take home. It is important that children’s reading is listened to regularly, preferably daily, to increase fluency and confidence. Please sign your child’s reading record each time you read with them (this can be just a few pages at a time), and send in each day.
Children have the opportunity to read every week to an adult. We need children’s reading books in school every day so that an adult is able to read with them at least once a week.
P.E Days
Y2 have P.E on a Monday with a cricket coach (for the first half term) and a Thursday with Chris Yates (all year). After the first half term is complete, our Monday P.E day will change to Wednesday. Please ensure that earrings are removed or covered with tape or plasters. Children can wear their P.E kits to school on these days with trainers or pumps. Please do not bring a P.E bag to school.
Water Bottles
Please ensure your child has a water bottle in school each day. Please use plain water only.
SATS
Your child will be required to take the National SAT tests in Y2. These tests have now been made optional for schools however we will still be carrying them out as a way to inform assessment. These will take place in May. Your child will be tested on their grammar, reading comprehension, spelling and maths skills. Children will be given a level for writing using teacher assessment and moderation. The tests are administered in the classroom but they must take place under ‘test conditions’. I would like to assure you that all the staff do everything possible to make these tests stress free for the children, whilst maintaining an emphasis on them doing their best. More information and past materials can be found:
https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-curriculum-assessments-practice-materials
Phonics Screening Test
Children who did not pass the Phonics Screening Test in Y1 will be required to take the test in the summer term of Y2.
Additional Log in Information
Children also be given a Times Table Rockstars log in. These provide access to online maths games matched to each child’s ability.
If you have any queries please contact me via Seesaw or on the door in the morning or afternoon.
Thank you for your continued support,
Yours sincerely,
Miss A. Kearsley
