Our Day in Nursery

We start school at 8:55 a.m. Our day in Nursery begins with the children hanging up their coats, putting their school bag away and self-registering independently. We then sit on the carpet, ready to go through the visual timetable and familiarise the children with routines of the day.

On a Tuesday morning, we have gymnastics with our specialist teacher, Jenny Gym.

On a Wednesday afternoon, we have music with Mrs Garfield.

Throughout the day, we learn through play-based topic curriculum and follow the Statutory Early Years Framework, as well as Development Matters.  Children play and join in flexible topic-based learning which is adapted and based on their particular interests. Some activities may include mark-making and writing, construction, creative, role-play, small world, mud kitchen, sand and water. All activities are carefully planned to bring on the children’s learning and cater for individual next steps in all seven areas of learning. Teaching is also delivered through specific, targeted play activities, 1:1 activities, small group work and some whole-class carpet sessions. We have a snack daily at 10 a.m with fruit and story-time at the end of each day.

As Nursery settle into the school routine, they begin to have more focussed sessions, including one topic-based learning, one Read Write Inc. phonics session and one maths lesson each day.
