World Book Day

Letters to Father Christmas

This week, we have enjoyed reading our focus book, The Jolly Christmas Postman. In Literacy, we wrote our own letters to Father Christmas using the Set 1 and 2 sounds we have learnt – great job everyone! We really enjoyed walking into Boothstown to post our letters and going to Desire for a hot chocolate!

The Nativity

We have used the book ‘The Nativity’ to learn about the Christmas Story and used this to support our writing. Children wrote short phrases about the Nativity scene using the phonics they have learnt. We made stained glass candle dream catchers, Nativity puppets and made stables out of Numicon!

We performed our Nativity and the children have done a fabulous job with their song words and individual parts. Well done everyone!

Diwali and Remembrance Day

This week, we have continued to look at different celebrations with a focus on Diwali and Remembrance Day. We looked at special clothes worn at Diwali and tried them on. We also tried some Indian celebration foods, made Rangoli patterns and Diya lamps. We learnt about Remembrance Day, creating some art using the ipads and looking at the significance of the poppy. In Literacy, we used the books Binny’s Diwali and Little Glow to write short phrases. In Maths, we looked at and made repeating patterns, linking this to Rangoli patterns.

Bonfire Night and Halloween Celebrations

This week, we started the week with our Spooky Party Day! We had lots of fun dressing up, playing party games, decorating monster biscuits and making paper spider webs. For the rest of the week, we have been creative by making bonfire themed art and firework salt paintings using watercolours. In Literacy, we have been spelling CVC words and writing short phrases using our two focus stories, Christopher Pumpkin and Room on the Broom.

People Who Help Us

This week, we began learning about ‘People Who Help Us’ starting with a visit from the local fire station! We were all excited to meet some real-life firefighters and ask them our questions and explore the fire engine too. We especially loved squirting the water from the hose!

We also met a police officer who told us all about his job and even let us sit in the driver’s seat of the police van and press the siren! We have taken our fingerprints, used role play resources to act out our learning and labelled pictures of police cars and fire engines. We have also learnt about vets, creating animal masks, matching animals with their homes and making some ‘vet-themed’ biscuits.
